Blekko’s Innovative Search Analytics Tool

Blekko, a search engine founded in 2010 and notable for spam reduction efforts, launched a search analytics tool called Web Grepper in September. The new feature will make much more accessible deep web data that has been, until now, tough or even impossible to search for. Web Grepper will find unique trends and information, even those patterns embedded in code, which cannot be discovered by other search engines. For instance, you can keep an eye on the popularity of Google’s +1 button or sites that utilize Facebook’s Connect.  This information can then be utilized by your internet marketing agency for your website’s online campaign and search engine optimization (SEO) strategy. The name Grepper originated from the text matching command-line search tool called grep first formulated for UNIX. This tool lets users run searches in the HTML coding of over 20 billion URLs in the Blekko index. This is done by submitting questions on the search engine’s home page.  Follow the instructions for entering your query in the search box and click on the ‘request a report’ button. The Blekko’s community will vote daily to choose questions to be analyzed and results are made available through a report, which are run twice daily, Monday through Friday. This is a great web intelligence tool to monitor interesting and useful trends, given that the quantity of data now included in coding is increasing by the day. The search engine is ensuring that this feature will not be misused by hackers or used to mine personal or sensitive information. All greps are reviewed manually and monitored for malicious behavior.
